Which Natural Stone to choose? Granite or marble!!!
Marble and granite come in the list of most sought after natural stone. They are incorporated in various household applications. However, few people refrain from installing marble tiles and prefer to choose granite for the counter tops and slabs. People install granite because of its low maintenance costs.
It has been observed that marble counter tops require frequent cleaning regimes, in comparison with granite tiles. However, this is a big myth. There are two factors that can lead to staining of a natural stone. Firstly, the staining property depends upon the texture of the tile surface i.e. polished, honed or leathered and secondly upon the porosity of the tile.
It is believed that sedimentary and metamorphic rocks have high porosity, which makes them susceptible to stains. However, igneous rocks like granite and basalt have low porosity as compared to other natural stones.
A general rule to gage the porosity of tile depends upon its tile color. However, a dark colored marble tiles has lower porosity that dark granite tiles. Therefore, people prefer to install absolute black marble in comparison with light colored marble that has high porosity.
As far as, the texture is concerned, one should install polished marble tiles. These tiles have closed pores due to polished surface. It acts as barrier between dirt and tile surface. However, honed tiles are all the more susceptible to dirt and stains. The stain resistant property of leathered stone lies somewhere between polished and honed tiles
However, the only obstacle with marble tile is that they are sensitive to cleaning agents. The natural stone surface gets etched due to acidic cleaners like orange juice or vinegar. This leads to removal of the polished layer. Hence, it is advisable to use honed or leathered tiles for kitchen applications. You can also appoint a professional to refinish your marble tiles.
So, don't hesitate from installing marble tiles, utilize their beauty and accentuate your homes.

which colour tiles to go with my dark kitchen work tops?
im getting a new kitchen soon,with dark work surfaces i.e mock granite or marble,does anyone have any suggestions of colours for tiles for kitchen walls that will go nicely with these,thanks in advance
Hi, I think most colours would go, but why don't you try matching the tiles to the colour of your new units eg: if you have white units, then go with white tiles. That way everything will blend in perfectly.
