What does it mean to break the dormancy?
In biology were learning about plants and what not and it says that cold temps for example breaks the dormancy for some plants? What does that mean??? cause I thought cold temps. made some plants go into dormancy cause they wouldn't survive. I don't know..I'm just confused!
Cold weather is an important factor in dormancy in the plant world. At lot of plants like fruit trees and other flowering plants need a cold snap to go into proper dormancy to set flower or fruit ( Some need more cold (chill) Lilacs for example in the west coast of the united states, you need to cut back or stop watering around late summer or early fall so the plant could really go dormant ( loose all the leaves) to help set flowers in addition to the cold. If the cold is more mild in some years you will have a less impressive fruit or flower display. The warmer days and sunshine help heat up the buds so they can open faster. I notice sometimes their is a delay in breaking dormancy because the colder weather still lingers a little longer. Some plants like tulips need a winter cold so they could bloom and break dormancy easier but it is the warmth that accelerates the breaking dormancy process.Another example would be like Anna Apple in coastal southern california, it doesn't really go totally dormant because the weather is so mild and doesn't need to break dormancy as much as compared to other areas where the mean temperature during the winter is much colder. So in summary it depends on the chilling factor and the warmth of the temperature.
