How best to preserve an old town clerk's record book with handwritten birth, marriage, & death records?
I would like to make sure that this book - over 150 years old - is stored in a way that will preserve it, AND will also be accessible to people who want to see their family history. Any ideas on whom I should contact? (BTW contacting the town's historical society is NOT an option, as they are the people who are asking me about it! - and the local library does not have appropriate storage facilities).
The Michigan State Library has provided appropriate storage for many old original works regulated to paper. So I suggest you contact a large state library for storage ideas. I do know that LDS does microfilm records/paper work, and thereby preserves on film these old treasures. If the pages are not yellowed or spotted, ask someone to carefully take straight-on digital pics of each page and download to several CDs. This way, if the paper/book gets lost, in a fire, etc., there will be a few printable CDs around to "replace" it. Print out on acid-free paper. Don't just hand it over to someone who purports to "know-it-all" re storage, etc. Do take pictures before handing over any thing to anyone. Just a word of caution.
